Even though you’re able to watch a movie on your TV, laptop, tablet or even your phone these days, the movie experience in a good cinema can’t be beat. From the crispest sound systems to the widest screens, we’ve rounded up five of the best cinemas in the country for you to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
Golden Village Suntec City
If you like your audio loud and immersive, Golden Village Suntec City has got you covered. Hall 2 at this cinema uniquely houses the Barco Auro 11.1 Channels Sound System, which provides a more natural and realistic sound that will echo through your mind for an unforgettable audio experience. This cinema also features ProBax seats, which are designed to increase comfort and improve posture.
In addition, being the newest Golden Village cinema with Gold Class halls, GV Suntec City has one of the swankiest Gold Class lounges and seats. Gold Class will allow you to elevate your cinema experience by supplying you with a private lounge, plush electronic recliner seats, a concierge-style service, and the option to enjoy fine foods and wines while watching a movie.
#03-373 Suntec City Mall, 3 Temasek Blvd. (East Wing, next to Tower 4, Level 3)
Golden Village VivoCity
Golden Village VivoCity is widely regarded as the most popular and posh Golden Village cinema. With good reason too, as GV VivoCity is the largest multiplex in Singapore with a total of 15 screens, including 3 Gold Class halls and 1 exclusive GVmax hall.
GV VivoCity’s Gold Class halls house Nappa leather-clad Barcelona seats, which are soft and fully-contoured, giving movie-goers maximum support and comfort. Not to mention, the seats come with built-in USB chargers too if you need to give your smartphone a quick juice boost.
On the other hand, GVmax has one of the widest, non-IMAX cinema screens in Asia (22.4 metres), giving viewers a great view without having to strain their necks. GVmax also comes with Dolby Atmos – a whopping 67 speakers – that gives the sensation of cinematic audio moving all around you.

The Cathay Cineplex
Back in the old days, The Picturehouse back then was Singapore’s only art film cinema with Oscar ergonomic chairs. After being converted into The Cathay Cineplex, it has only gotten better. Cathay’s cinemas have cushy seats and crisp images, and The Cathay Cineplex is no exception.
Hall 1 – also known as The Grand Cathay – is a large THX-certified cinema that promises a high-quality audiovisual experience. Plus, The Cathay Cineplex’s Platinum Suites is a strong contender to Golden Village’s Gold Class, offering a variety of food and plush leather recliner seats with ample legroom. The seats in Platinum Suites also come with blinders on the sides so that couples may have a little more privacy when they’re snuggling up together.
5-6/F The Cathay, 2 Handy Rd.
Shaw Theatres Lido
Located in the heart of Orchard, Shaw Theatres Lido not only offers one of the best cinema experiences in Singapore, but gives patrons convenient access to Singapore’s biggest shopping district. Moreover, the lobby features floor-to-ceiling windows that present a splendid view of Orchard Road, while the actual cinema halls provide viewers with crystal-clear images and an excellent sound system.
Shaw Theatres Lido is also home to Singapore’s first IMAX’s Digital Theatre System. IMAX screens are much, much larger than those of your average cinema, encompassing your field of view, and come accompanied with heart-thumping audio. Furthermore, IMAX 3D movies add a depth to the movie for a truly immersive experience.

Shaw Theaters Waterway Point
Shaw Theatres Waterway Point is Singapore’s newest cinema with IMAX capability. It is smaller than Shaw Theatres Lido, but bigger than Shaw Theatres JCube, Singapore’s third IMAX movie venue. However, Waterway Point’s IMAX hall has an edge over Lido’s and JCube’s because it has significantly more legroom.
An additional novelty to Shaw Theatres Waterway Point is that it also happens to be the first cineplex in Singapore to be located below ground level, fulfilling your cosy dreams of watching movies from an underground bunker.
