1. Behold the most dramatic, earth-shattering, climate-changing occurence ever: Singaporean singer Stefanie Sun was snapped at McDonalds in not a glamorous stage costume nor a gala ball gown but–shock, horror, calamity!–a casual bordering-on-slovenly ensemble, proving once again that celebrities are people, too. Luckily Stefanie has a sense of humor and responded in jest to critics via Twitter. In her reworked version of the photo she writes “A crown + Meitu Xiu Xiu. Tada!!! A queen’s style resurfaces.”
2. We’re a country that clearly loves to stay connected: despite only 5.3 million people in Singapore, we have 8.3 million mobiles. so rather cleverly, SingTel has announced that it will raise prices for its monthly mobile subscriptions. First time customers, or anyone renewing their contract will be hit with an extra $3 per month. But even if you’re with StarHub or M1, don’t start gloating to your SingTel friends too soon: price hikes are likely across the industry.
3. In sports news, Italian Series A champions, Juventus Football Club, swung by town to utterly annihilate the Singaporean team 5-0 over the weekend. The much anticipated game christened the new Singapore National Stadium and was watched by nearly 30,000 people in the crowd, but alas, a victory was not in Singapore’s fate. Catch all the game highlights here, including Andrea Pirlo’s opening goals that led him to be named man of the match.
4. Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) have updated their cool new app to help us all be better citizens. Available from the Apple store, the app will help Singaporeans find recycling locations, sign up for voluntary programs and uncover new hawker stalls. The app will also allow users to get the most up-to-date public service announcements about public health, pollution control and regular crisis situations like haze and dengue outbreaks.
5. Ok, this happened in Japan, but since she’s our unofficial national obsession, this deserves a mention: her royal fluffiness Hello Kitty has embarked on her first intergalactic space mission. To celebrate the brand turning 40, a small Kitty figurine was launched into space and Japan hopes it will attract more companies to invest into the space business. On board the Hello Kitty satellite there’s also an electronic panel where fans can write messages and have them feature in space. So glad she’ll be representing Earth at intergalactic parliaments.
