Battle of the musicians: Joe Satriani versus Zubin Mehta

Hot young things are a dime a dozen in the music industry nowadays, but let’s face it—we’re all pretty tired of emo punk bands whining about their miserable love lives, or ex Disney stars chugging out club hits. As such, we’ve rounded up two well-established musicians on their way to Singapore, who have been in the business way longer than any of these cookie cutter acts. Given their illustrious careers, we also thought it would be fun to pit them against one another, all in the name of good fun of course.

Zubin Mehta

(Performing Nov 11)

Joe Satriani

(Performing Nov 13)

Chose music over saving lives during college.

Quit his football aspirations to pursue music.
Conducted three world-class orchestras by the age of 25.  Educated several now world-famous guitarists by the 22.
Known for his fancy baton twirling prowess.  Known for his fast fingerwork.
Counts among his pals other classical mastreos your parents would probably be familiar with.  Rubbed shoulders with rock legend Mick Jagger.
Has received the prestigious Vienna Philharmonic Ring of Honor and the Tagore Award, amongst other accolades. Has the second most Grammy nominations, without ever winning an award.

Our verdict: We love them both, and their decision to pursue music over other seemingly more lucrative career paths is certainly worth applauding. Still, we’re more inclined to award plus points to Satriani, given the sad fact that his contributions don’t seem to be recognized by the Grammys.
