Netflix strikes again with a new promo incorporating the latest Singaporean meme

The guys behind the witty and very Singaporean promos for Netflix shows have been on a roll. They’ve been incorporating the goings-on in Singapore to contextualize their marketing campaigns for their shows, like a hazy, dark video of Yishun MRT station with the cryptic caption "Is Yishun cursed, simply unlucky, or struck by something stranger?" to market the second season of their hit original series Stranger Things, using a photo of <a href="http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/large-group-of-wild-boars-… target="_blank">boar sightings in Tuas to promote <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NetflixSG/photos/a.1530394350587020.1073741827…. target="_blank">Okja and even getting Singaporean darling Michelle Chong to be in a "scene" with Suzanna "Crazy Eyes" Warren in the latest season of Orange Is The New Black. And now they’re back with yet another unapologetic, smart promo.

Just over a week ago, a seemingly ordinary cleaner from Marina Parade Town Council became an overnight sensation when someone posted a picture of a notice showing the cleaning team for his block. The odd thing about it is that the supervisor and the cleaner is the same person, which became a meme that brought about "ownself supervise ownself" jokes. (Marina Parade Town Council has since released a "statement" <a href="http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/marine-parade-town-council… target="_blank">online)

The basis of the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pg/NetflixSG/photos/?tab=album&album_id=173… target="_blank">new promos revolve around this meme, accompanied by a simple caption, "If the Netflix gang were based in Marina Parade GRC…". It showcases the recently released new season of House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, as well as the upcoming October release of Stranger Things' second season. And it’s all pretty accurate too—Kevin Spacey's portrayal of Frank Underwood, who rose through the ranks from being party whip to the President of the United States in House of Cards through any means possible also earned him the title of being a bully, while King of Castle Byers Will Byers in Stranger Things saw an unsettling “end” in the show’s season finale.

As we've mentioned before, we love how Netflix connects with its local audience instead of just shoving promos of their shows into everyone's faces. Once again, well played.
