New local carpooling app makes it easier for Muslims to pray during Ramadan

While everyone else is muzzing over what the next novelty food item and upcoming baju kurung trend will be at this year’s annual Geylang Serai bazaar, 15 creative youths from the Malay/Muslim community huddled together and came up with a new free carpooling app called Terawhere (a play on the Arabic term, “terawih”, the name for the main night prayers during the fasting month of Ramadan) for mosque-goers.

The app works exactly how you think it would. It ticks all the right boxes to foster a strong community spirit—drivers heading to a particular mosque can input the time and place to meet and share their vehicle number and other details in the app. For riders, there’ll be an in-app map to help you find drivers who are going to the same mosque you’re going to. But here’s the kicker—unlike other popular car-sharing apps like UberPool and GrabShare, you won’t have to pay a single cent to use this service.

The app is currently in its final development stages and will roll out on May 26, just in time for Islam’s holy month of Ramadan.
