The hawker pop-up at Clifford Pier with eight of the esteemed hawkers in Tiong Bahru Market ended five days ago, but fret not, the beloved hawker center is finally unveiling its new look on May 20, after a three-month renovation.
But this reopening came all too soon for some of the hawkers who were only allowed to prepare their stalls on Wednesday (May 17). According to a report, some hawkers like 90-year-old Tay Soo Ran, who owns Tiong Bahru Fried Kway Teow and Loh Teck Seng of Teck Seng Soya Bean Drinks, might be delaying their stall opening for a day or two. Other hawkers are rushing to get their equipments ready and do the neccesary cleaning too. However, stall owners want customers to be assured that the prices will stay the same after the reopening.
The space will house the original number of 259 market stalls and 83 hawker stalls. The new hawker center has been refurbished with new tiles, paint and installations. Besides the seven high-volume low-speed fans installed on the second floor, there’ll also be six LCD screens, energy-saving lights and retractable sun shades. In order to cater to elderly diners and people with disabilities, movable seats have also been installed. It’s also one of the eight hawkers chosen to participate in the SolarNova Programme led by the Economic Development Board in partnership with HDB, where solar panels wil be installed on the rooftop at the end of the year.
