Created by Familiar Strangers, a collective that is dedicated to chronicling the stories of low-wage migrant workers in Singapore, this touching video has been making its rounds on the internet as it shows migrant workers reacting to both hate speech and words of encouragement from locals.
Reading from their mobile devices, it’s still easy to see the hurt, disappointment that come with reading such vitriol, but the video has a silver lining as there are many Singaporeans who are appreciative of their hard work.
Thought-provoking and candid, this goes to show that migrant workers are people too, and that it’s easy to lash out in hate rather than with empathy.

Migrant workers respond to comments made by Singaporeans
We often hear passing remarks being made about migrant workers, from the most unwelcoming ones to those of gratitude and appreciation. Some of which have even made its way online, sparking conversations and debates on social media and the Internet. But have we ever wondered how the workers would react to these comments when they see them? Editor’s Note: We would like to sincerely apologise for a mistake in the subtitles of the video, where Mr Xu Yi Wen’s name was spelled incorrectly as Mr Xu Wen.
