You can soon test ride driverless cars in Singapore

Last week, we heard about a cool drone that delivers mail to Pulau Ubin. Now, it looks like our city will be getting self-driving cars, according to a report by Channel News Asia.

The Ministry of Transport has rolled out an initiative where people can go on a ride in these self-driving cars. The first trial is being done at One-North along a 6km network. The vehicle moves at 35km/h for safety reasons, and there is a driver behind the wheel should emergencies occur.

The next place for these tests is the Gardens by The Bay. From Dec 1-14, visitors will be able to hitch a ride on these cars from 4pm-6pm. There is seating room for six people and standing room for four in each one. The car will move along a 1.5km stretch in the gardens and is free for all to hop on.

Finally, these driverless vehicles will also ply Sentosa and West Coast Highway. To make it more futuristic, visitors will be able to use a smartphone app or information kiosks to request a lift at the former location. The study is expected to end in two years.

Although industry experts say driverless vehicles will an everyday occurrence in 2030, the Ministry of Transport thinks that the robot overlords cars will be on the roads in 10 years.
