For most families observing Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, heading to Geylang Serai Bazaar is a big family event to stock up on delicious Hari Raya treats, shop for the hottest (pun unintended) baju kurung to wear after the fasting month and essentially bask in the festivities. But for others, it means suiting up in the most comfortable and cooling outfit to beat the heat when they queue for the next novelty food item.
Before you march on into the crowds, check out this year’s Street Light-up, which stretches along Sims Avenue and Changi Road. They’ve installed gigantic light installations modeled after various objects that are traditionally associated with the Malay heritage, such as the songket (a type of shimmering fabric that’s worn by men with their baju kurung) and modern interpretations of kampong houses.
When it comes to the food offerings at the bazaar, some traditionalists have previously aired their opinions about how the bazaar has changed, especially with all the modern food choices available, while others have embraced the change with open arms; evident by the growing number of people every year.
At this year’s Bazaar, which will take place from May 25-Jun 24, there’s going to be over 1,000 stalls selling all sorts of things, from traditional goodies like kuih tart (pineapple tarts) to decorative items and costumes. This also includes the many fun little stores selling exciting, not-so-traditional snacks like rainbow planet ice-cream buns and candyfloss burritos. Here’s what you can expect:
