The 2017 edition of the affordable recommendations list of eateries by Michelin Guide Singapore is out, and while the total number of entrants making it onto the Bib Gourmand went up from 34 last year to 38 this year, only three out of the nine new additions are hawker stalls.
Yes, this means that several of our usual haunts have been ousted from the list, including popular zhi char stall JB Ah Meng, hipster hawker The Fishball Story, Turkish restaurant Alaturka, and halal favorites Hjh Maimunah and Wedang. In their place and expanding the list are nine new entrants made up of three hawkers and six restaurants.
The three hawkers include Ah Er Soup at ABC Brickworks Food Centre, New Lucky Claypot Rice at Holland Drive Market and Zai Shun Curry Fish Head at 253 Jurong East Street. The six restaurants are Bar-Roque Grill at Amara Hotel, Japanese Unagi Restaurant in Keong Saik Road, Blue Ginger in Tanjong Pagar Road, Tsuta at Pacific Plaza, Shirokane Tori-Tama in Robertson Walk and Liao Fan Hawker Chan at 78 Smith Street (Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle’s restaurant offshoot).
According to Michelin, these places are being recognized for serving quality eats while being wallet friendly (by their standards, it means requiring not more than $45 per person for a meal) at the same time.
While we’re slightly spiffed that some hawkers have not made the cut, it could also mean that more hawkers will be receiving Michelin stars at next week’s Michelin Guide Singapore 2017 Star Event, who knows. We’ll only find out come Jun 29.
