5 unexpected acts at the mega Sing50 concert

When the 70-artist line-up for the Aug 7 Sing50 concert was announced, there were a lot of wholesome usual suspects. But also in the mix were some rather interesting choices. Here are five

Lang Lang

Remember the mini-scandal over the purchase of 50 grand pianos a few months ago? Well, they will be used by local Mandopop star JJ Lin and Chinese concert pianist Lang Lang for a performance one of JJ’s hit songs Clash of The Souls that features plenty (50 pianos’ worth?) of instrumental bits.

Shigga Shay

This local rapper has been pretty prolific of late, with his gangsta style peppered with tons of Singlish and Hokkien. Not the most wholesome choice for an NDP concert, though. Case in point: his new video for the song “Shigga Morning” featuring tons of scantily clad babes (including songstress Inch Chua and other local female musicians) preening around for his attention.

The Oddfellows

They are the original indie kids. They made waves in the early ’90s and are best known for hit song “So Happy” that became the first local song to top the 98.7FM charts. They’re not that controversial, but we’re still intrigued because they haven’t gotten together for a performance for a very long time.

X’Ho

Aka Chris Ho. He’s one of the pioneers of Singapore’s rock music scene has always been super underground and openly anti-establishment, making him a rather unusual choice for an SG50 concert. We’ll be curious to see the musician-author-DJ-filmmaker’s song choices.

Mohamed Noor

He’s not your run-of-the-mill pop star. The multi-instrumentalist can play some pretty obscure stuff like the tabla and mandolin and has collaborated with big-name international acts like Gorillaz, David Bowie and Robbie Williams.
