There’s a lot to be happy about our film scene, what with the inclusive LGBT-focused film festival happening this weekend and Kirsten Tan’s debut feature Pop Aye being submitted for the Foreign Language Film category in next year’s Academy Awards (read our interview with her here). But for the first time, we’ll be getting a film festival from the country that gave us Nokia.
Co-presented with the Embassy of Finland, the Finnish Film Foundation and the Finland 100 team, the Finnish Film Festival will be held at The Projector from Oct 12-15, screening a good choice of films that showcase the country’s social and natural landscapes (they’ve also promised some “culturally appropriate Finnish munchies” too).
You can catch films like the feature by Oscar nominated filmmaker Selma Vilhunen, Little Wing (Tytto Nimelta Varpu), a moving film of a young girl who goes on an adventure to find her biological father after being raised by an erratic and immature mother for the past 12 years; or the devastating Diving Into The Unknown (Takaisin Pintaan), which follows a group of Finnish cave divers who go on a seemingly impossible mission to retrieve their dead friends from a previous accident home (real footages included). Nature lovers should catch the marvellous documentary epic, Tale of a Lake (Jarven Tarina), which showcases the thousands of lakes that Finland is known for, and its inhabitants in a visually spectacular way.
