You’ve already got your schedule of films to catch down to a T this month, with heady options like Peter Bogdanovich’s Saint Jack at State of Motion, 03-Flats at the Centre for Contemporary Arts at Gillman Barracks and Little Miss Sunshine at the recently formed Singapore Open Air Club. And while February will be overshadowed by international blockbusters like the sequel to 50 Shades of Grey and John Wick: Chapter 2, do keep your calendar open for a bunch of local telemovie screenings at Objectifs’ annual film series, Watch Local.
In case you forgot, feature-length telemovies, commissioned by television stations and often based on short stories and stage plays by Singaporean authors, were de rigueur at one point, the sort of event we could gather around the television set for (we know, so retro!). Now you can relive the good days with a selection of telemovies spanning the 1990s to 2016, with highlights including the former Singapore Broadcasting Corporation’s (now known as MediaCorp) first English-language telemovie, For Time Tomorrow, a sort of time-travelling drama about a man who meets a 19-year-old version of his wife recently murdered by a robber; the 1995 romance classic Cupid Love, which tells the story a getai singer falling in love with the son of a rich man and starring household names Chen Hanwei and Koh Chieng Mun; and K. Rajagopal’s The Playground, which was inspired by the late Arthur Yap’s poem titled “2 Mothers in a HDB Playground”, and revolves around the relationship between two sisters and one of their sons.
