One of the longest running film festivals in Singapore is back following a one-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Presented by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Singapore, the European Film Festival (EUFF) is now headed to The Projector to bring the best of contemporary European cinema to local film buffs.
Celebrating its 30th edition from May 6-23, this year’s event presents 23 films over a longer festival period, reflecting on the diversity of perspectives, languages and cultures from across the European continent.
Previously known as the European Union Film Festival, EUFF 2021 will continue to spotlight Europe’s common cultural heritage.
Parque Mayer
As this year’s featured country, Portugal will open the festival with its film Parque Mayer on May 6. Set in 1933 Lisbon, the comedy-drama delves into the happenings at a theatre in Parque Mayer, the Portuguese capital’s theatre and entertainment district. In fact, in conjunction with EUFF’s 30th anniversary, a free public screening will be held on May 12 at 8pm. Audiences can simply head to euff.com.sg/tickets to book their complimentary tickets.
The Devil’s Mistress
Other noteworthy screenings include Angelo, a movie inspired by the true story of an African servant who achieves prominence as a Viennese court mascot but finds trouble when he secretly weds a white woman. Then there’s The Devil’s Mistress, a biopic which looks at Czech actress Lida Baarova and her doomed love affair with the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany, Joseph Goebbels.
Also grab your tickets for the light-hearted drama that is Chasing Unicorn, an Estonian flick that sees a female founder attempting to make it big in the male-dominated Silicon Valley.
