Spotlighting women in cinema, this year’s French Film Festival offers new and premiering flicks

A luxury vacation to Europe may be out of the question for the time being, but this November, take a cinematic trip around France as the French Film Festival (Nov 6-22) is returning to showcase the best of French storytelling. Presented as part of vOilah! France Singapore Festival 2020, the longest-running foreign film festival in Singapore will feature a line-up of 37 films at Shaw Theatres, The Projector and online—all in partnership with Alliance Francaise de Singapour, Gardens by the Bay and The Projector.

Look forward to a kaleidoscope of genres, from emotional drama features to irreverent comedies and hard-hitting documentaries. The event will definitely have something for everyone. Plus, this year’s line-up will also spotlight empowered women in French cinema as more than half of the films are either produced by a female director or follow the story of strong female characters.

First, don’t miss the opening film Mama Weed, which stars celebrated Academy Award-nominated actress Isabelle Huppert who plays a French-Arabic translator working for the anti-drug squad in Paris before becoming an atypical drug dealer.

Another must-watch of the festival is Aline, The Voice of Love, a riveting movie inspired by the career and life of Celine Dion, one of the best-selling artists of all time. At the same time, The Big Hit will be making its international premiere at the French Film Festival before being released in France’s theatres this December.

In addition to the many highlights, 20 new feature films will also be shown, still fresh from France’s box office. These include heartfelt comedy A Friendly Tale, coming-of-age flick Summer of 85, and romance drama The Mermaid in Paris.

Finally, the festival will be offering The Best of French Film Festival for the very first time this year. This segment is presented online by Shaw Theatres and The Projector. A specially curated selection of 12 films from the current and past editions of the festival will be available so movie fiends can partake in the festival in the comfort of their own home.

Like we said before, there’s bound to be something for everyone at the French Film Festival 2020.

The French Film Festival runs from Nov 6-22 at Shaw Theatres and online. More information available here.
