SMRT is teaming with Dutch automated-vehicle makers 2getthere to bring its systems to Singapore. Operating under the joint venture 2getthere Asia Pte Ltd, they hope to bring these LRT-like pods to Singapore by the end of this year. If you’re wondering what the difference is between these and the LRT, they’ll be running on roads instead of tracks.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to hop on one to get to Orchard Road via the CTE just yet; these 24-seaters will operate on smaller roads. Think somewhere contained like Mapletree Business City or university campuses, where they could potentially replace shuttle buses. The pods run on electricity and will be able to carry up to 8,000 passengers per hour in any single direction. And if all goes well, this could very well be the future of travelling within Singapore.
Fingers crossed that they will name the system Transpod.
