Kooky Japanese musicians
Japanese fusion guitarist Saigenji will be playing everything from bebop to J-pop at Blu Jaz on Thursday, while J-reggae legend Papa U-Gee is making an appearance at Straits Records on Bali Lane this Saturday, promising an acoustic(!) set. Another Japanese artist playing Arab Street is Rei-fu, making an appearance with local newcomer Sol Frio at Working Title.
A new bakery to obsess over
Asanoya Bakery, tucked away on unassuming Queen Street, is our latest favorite spot for delicious carbs. The range straddles both crusty European breads and pillowy Asian buns, and we also really love their chocolate lava cubes. Plus, the airy space, in-house coffee and abundant seating make it a top alt-brunch spot.
New places to drink on Seah Street
While we still frequent Seah Street standbys Lot, Stock & Barrel and Mr Punch, the ramshackle little street is getting quite the makeover with a host of new openings. Go for Japanese craft beer at Restaurant Sela, bespoke cocktails at Tess Bar and basic alfresco drinks (or coffee) at Bridge.
Your last chance to smoke shisha
The shisha ban is about to kick in, so for those who partake, enjoy a last nicotine-filled hurrah at these five remaining shisha spots.
Freaky art on show
Despite its rather dry name, the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize Exhibition at SAM is actually pretty killer if you like your art larger-than-life and disturbing. You can’t miss Choe U-Ram’s Lovecraftian metal carcass, Custos Cavum, which fills a room at the center of the museum.
It’s where the vinyl fetishists hang out
Between old school record store Straits Records and forthcoming hipster vinyl bar LongPlay, the Bugis area is all set to be where to meet other record fanciers. If you can’t wait till LongPlay opens, nearby Loof is throwing their regular vinyl-only Wax On Wax Off bash this Saturday.
