Old Habits Die Hard

Yeah, yeah—like you don’t make resolutions every year. Resolutions are just mankind’s sadistic little way of disappointing itself. We’ve yet to meet anyone who’s kept theirs for more than a week—but we are willing to try and break that record this year. Joining the fray of the ridiculously optimistic, we’ve come up with our very own list of Page 3 resolutions because we’re sure there’re some things that we could do better in 2007, believe it or not.For a start, we could be nicer.

12 Singaporean Days of Christmas

While we appreciate Christmas carols for the charm that they bring to the holidays, we in Singapore just cannot relate to some of them—like “The 12 Days of Christmas.” Honestly, who in the world gives someone a partridge in a pear tree for Christmas? And, like, does any department store in Singapore even carry these?Since we’re in a particularly festive mood this week, we decided to work our I-S magic on this famous Christmas carol and turn it into something that, as Singaporeans, we can understand.

Taking the High Road

So, Malaysia’s Genting International just won the bid to build the much-anticipated Integrated Resort (IR) on Sentosa Island, triumphing over international competitors like Kerzner International and Las Vegas’s Eighth Wonder. This is a step forward for Singapore and Malaysia, as both countries have wanted to collaborate and work together closely to rekindle strained ties.

The Business of Love

The rise of singles in Singapore has been a bit of a pain for the government, who would prefer to see more people married and starting families. But as pragmatic as ever, the government has decided to turn a social problem into an economic solution.

For the Record

We’ve made the world’s longest popiah, we’ve folded the most origami cranes in just five minutes, and we’ve scuba dived the longest by staying underwater for 220 hours.

Say Cheese!

With Singapore’s national broadsheet establishing its interactive portal to promote “citizen journalism”, we have seen an influx of readers’ photos and news tip offs. Readers come up with the most bizarre stuff, like a multitude of car crashes, people getting trapped in loos, sewer rats, people sleeping on trains—content that is quirky perhaps, but is it news? Do we really need to read about bad driving, poor hygiene and sheer ineptness?

Spaced Out

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) recently announced that some vacant state land will be up for tender, and zoned for “agri-tainment” (that is, a mix of agriculture, recreation and entertainment). According to SLA, agri-tainment can be defined as “nature education, outdoor and/or recreational sports, rustic guest accommodation, spa facilities, arts and handicraft, art studios...fruit orchards, vegetable and food crops, and toad and frog culture.”Good news, right?

Faking It

It takes a wise man to handle a lie. A fool had better remain honest.—Norman DouglasEveryone lies and if you claim to be innocent of this little sin, then all you’ve done is just prove our point. What really struck us though is that more people seem to be getting caught recently—and not just for little white lies either. Don’t get us wrong—it’s not that we condone lying, but it’s as if no one even tries to lie properly these days.
